But wait, you say, I know nothing about building robots or anything! It will be too hard! I can't do it! .....

Never fear, we have engineering mentors who can take your ideas and help you make them come to life! We teach you everything you need to know to succeed on our award-winning team! No prior knowledge is required!

You can expand the videos to full screen to see them better.
There are two "seasons" for the team: Preseason, and Robot Build Season.

Preseason:
  • first semester
  • meet Tues/Thurs after school
  • agenda/topics:
    • safety
    • tools
    • robot parts
    • programming (C++)
    • CAD (Solidworks)
    • robot mechanisms
    • driving a robot
    • the Pit
    • awards
    • attend outreach events such as STEAMfest, etc.
    • select which out of state event we will attend
    • and lots of other things

One of the things we do that doesn't involve a robot is preparing "trinkets and trash" to exchange with other students at competition.

Robot Build Season!
The first Saturday in January is the "Kickoff" when the season's game is revealed. We get really busy this semester:
  • meet Mon, Tue, Thurs after school and Saturday during day
  • plan game strategy
  • brainstorm robot designs
  • select robot design
  • CAD robot parts/mechanisms
  • make & test prototypes
  • fabricate robot mechanisms
  • build robot
  • program robot
  • practice driving robot
  • prepare to win awards
Picture
Kickoff is held at Charger Union Theater at UAH. Many local teams come to the event.

Motors require gearboxes. Here we are putting these together.

Going to Competitions!

Competitions:
  • 40-60 teams at each event
  • meet students from all over the US and the world
  • attend an out of state event
  • attend the Rocket City Regional at the VBC
  • playing field is 27 feet by 54 feet
  • Event schedule:
    • load in the night before
    • day 1 - pit setup, robot inspection, practice matches
    • day 2 - qualification  matches all day
    • day 3 - more quals in morning, then playoffs and awards ceremonies

You can watch some of our matches from previous years. Look for robot 6107. In the first video on the right we are in the RED Alliance, and are in the Blue Alliance during the second video.

We get the chance to meet and make friends with teams from other countries. Here you see us with Brazilian Storm, 6404.
