FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: When does the team meet?
A: First Semester we meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school until 7 PM. Please have your parents pick you up out front by the College Academy entrance. Occasionally we finish before 7 PM. Your student will call you for an early pick up if so.
Second Semester we meet Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday after school until 7 PM, and on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM (sometimes later). Sometimes, if the need arises, we will meet during the day on a school day if there is a holiday/no school that day. These meetings will be announced at least a week ahead of time.
Q: Where does the team meet?
A: meetings are held in the Robotics Lab, upstairs in the College Academy, Room 2416.
Q: Is there gonna be food?
A: There are snacks after school. On Saturday meetings we provide lunch and snacks.
Q: How much will it cost me to join the team?
A: Nothing! All travel, shirts, meals, etc. are paid for by our generous Sponsors.
Q: Can girls join?
A: Our team is inclusive to all Gender identifications Human or Robot.
Q: I'm in 8th grade and am interesting in joining. Can I?
A: Yes. The only thing you can't do is be on the drive team at competitions. Besides that the sky's the limit.
Q: I would like to build robots, but don't know what it takes. How can I help?
A: Never fear. We have mentors who just happen to be engineers and who have designed robots before. They are here to help every step of the way. Students come up with the ideas and the engineers help them bring them to reality.
Q: Can I support the team when they compete?
A: Yes! We go to competition each year, and there are thousands of spectators, and judges, in the stands. We want a cheer squad to encourage team spirit in the stands. Our robot will compete in around 10 matches, and we will need cheerleaders to encourage them! You can travel to out-of-state competitions with us, too!
Q: I am interested, but don't really want to work on a robot. What can I do instead?
A: We have a need for people with a variety of talents such as artists, marketers, photographers, and other creative types.
Q: I participate in other school activities. Do I have to attend every robotics meeting?
A: While it is encouraged to attend every meeting, especially second semester during Build Season. Team members who are on special subteams (such as team spirit, marketing, etc.) don't have to come to every meeting. As long as you let us know, you are all set.
Q: I don't attend Mae Jemison High School. Can I still join the team?
A: We are a community team so attendance at Jemison isn't required. So YES! Come and be robotic with us!
Q: My parents like to be involved in my extracurricular activities. Is there anything they can do?
A: Absolutely! we 'preciate Parental participation. There are many ways that parents can help.
they can:
- provide snacks or meals for our meetings
- help to construct the playing field parts
- write grants
- help with fundraising activities
- Transport team members to off campus events
